HOME OF PERFUMES
Perfume is something almost everyone loves. But, have you ever think about where these perfumes come? You’ll usually say France. Right? No, you are not right. Here you’ll be educated about the home of perfumes. The world’s almost 60% perfume growth is from here. Shubra village is a small village in northern Egypt. You wouldn’t have heard this name while spending hundreds of $’s on perfumes. Shubra village’s population is only 10,000. It is located between Kairo and Alexandria. There are miles of farmland in this village. It is a hub of Jasmine cultivation. It is a center of fragrance to the world. Every single white flower is handpicked by the thousands of residents here. More than 7 tons of jasmine are produced every year here. Half the global supply of perfume behind every jasmine flower growth cut and processed are mesmerizing stories of village residents. Villagers work extremely long hours all throughout the night to maximize their pickings. Egypt is not just a land of deserts. It is also an example of diversity. It is all green here. Farmers start at midnight and go into 6 a.m. Not just it is cool this time but, also the flowers open up now. Jasmine flower is sensitive to the sun. Therefore, it is good to collect it at night. Jasmine picking is a hard job but, a determinant worker can harvest around 11 pounds of petals a day. The harvest season only lasts a few months a year. After petal picking, they are sent to a nearby factory. The fragrance is turned into a paste or liquid. This production is exported globally. Buyers of this paste are mainly from Paris, New York and, Tokyo. Petals are put in the hot boiling water to convert it into a paste. Nobody really gives credit to these people who are working really long hours earning only a few U.S. $’s a day. No one sees that when they actually buy the perfume bottle from the store’s shelf.
